Acis and Galatea
Book opera tickets for Acis and Galatea at Blackwater Valley Opera Festival 2026.
Handel’s Acis and Galatea recounts the tragic love between the sea-nymph Galatea and the shepherd Acis. Their happiness is destroyed by the jealousy of the Cyclops Polyphemus, who kills Acis by crushing him with a rock. In her grief, Galatea transforms him into a flowing river, so that their love endures beyond death – a myth of beauty, loss, and eternal devotion that inspired Handel’s enduring pastoral opera. Projection and carefully designed lighting will create an evocative setting for this one-hour performance, featuring the Irish Baroque Orchestra in St Carthage’s Cathedral, Lismore.

Irish Salon Opera Series:
The Deserted Village by John William Glover
Book opera tickets for The Deserted Village at Blackwater Valley Opera Festival 2026.
Inspired by Oliver Goldsmith’s poem, this Irish opera reflects on the decline of rural life and the passing of a once-vibrant community. Its music combines Romantic lyricism with Irish melodic colour, creating a portrait of nostalgia and quiet dignity. Presented in concert form, it offers a rare glimpse into Ireland’s early operatic voice – a rarely heard gem of the nineteenth-century repertoire.
With artists from the Blackwater Valley Opera Festival Chorus 2026, at St. Carthage’s Cathedral, Lismore.

When Forests Sing
Book opera tickets for When Forests Sing at Blackwater Valley Opera Festival 2026.
Following its Dublin premiere at the Samuel Beckett Theatre in Trinity College Dublin, When Forests Sing is a wordless, immersive music performance created by Cork composer and sound artist Karen Power. It is not opera as most people know it. Instead, the work combines voices, instruments, technology and recorded forest sounds to create a shared musical soundscape.
The performance brings together musicians living with disabilities and emerging professional artists. Members of the Open Youth Orchestra of Ireland (OYOI) perform alongside students from the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM), technological instrumentalists, a choir, and local young people.
